Assisted Living Myths

The days when getting old meant you sat on the porch in your rocking chair or were sent to the nursing home to live out your days are long gone.

Today, seniors can choose to live in a retirement community, the best nursing home they can find, or senior housing, all of which are different but the same.

However, there are so many myths surrounding assisted living that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not be sure which way to turn when choosing the best assisted living community for your loved one.

In this blog, we’ll dispel a few of the myths for you.

Myth: Assisted Living Is Only for Sick People

This is one of the most common myths associated with senior living. In reality, seniors who are ill or disabled usually live in nursing homes.

Assisted living is made for seniors who are still mostly independent but feel a little unsafe completing daily tasks or staying by themselves.

Myth: Seniors Lose Their Independence

Another common myth is that seniors are stripped of their independence in assisted living communities. This myth couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, seniors in a senior living community are highly encouraged to keep their independence and do things for themselves. Senior citizens should continue to live bright, active lives in any senior community they choose.

Myth: Seniors Become Bored and Lonely

This myth is also one that has no basis in fact. Seniors are encouraged to keep their own schedules, and most luxury assisted living communities have plenty to offer their residents to do so they don’t become bored or lonely.

Whether it’s clubs, volunteer groups, or dips in the pool, there is plenty to do and plenty of people from your own peer group to socialize with.

Myth: Living It Home Is Cheaper

The monthly expenses to maintain a home are much higher than many seniors realize. You have a house payment, utilities, cable, water, and any other bills that come with maintaining your own home.

When you live in an assisted living community, the costs of your care, food, security, basic housekeeping, laundry, and more are factored into your monthly fee to live there, making it a whole lot cheaper in the long run.

Myth: Seniors Can’t Bring Their Spouse or Pets

While some assisted living communities don’t allow pets, most realize the importance and benefit of a companion for their senior residents.

Also, most communities will work to assist couples who apply for assisted living in their communities. Make sure to ask any assisted living community you’re considering about the rules for pets and spouses ahead of time.

Assisted Living Could Be the Right Choice!

These are just a few of the myths about assisted living communities that need to be debunked. Remember, while it might not be the best choice for everyone, it could be for you or your loved one.
